Obtaining an Alaska Driver License or State ID Card
OBTAINING AN ALASKA
DRIVER LICENSE or STATE IDENTIFICATION CARD
As a new resident you should transfer your out-of-state driver’s license for an Alaska driver’s license within 90 days. You will need to pass the written knowledge test, supply the required documents then an Alaska driver’s license can be issued. After passing the written knowledge test or to obtain an Alaska ID you will need to present the following four documents:
1. PRIMARY DOCUMENT: Legal name and Date of Birth:
• An original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate
• Passport (current), foreign passports must have the appropriate immigration documents.
• Resident Alien Card or Employment Authorization Card
• Military Identification for active duty, retiree or reservist.
• Certificate of Citizenship, Naturalization or Birth Abroad
Please note that if your legal name is different than what is printed on your birth certificate, you will need to bring in the document(s) that provide proof of the name change such as a current U.S. passport, certified adoption papers, marriage certificate, court order or divorce decree, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Name Change.
2. SECONDARY ITEM (verification of the primary document)
• Any primary document
• Current State issued drivers license or ID
• Employee ID
• School ID
• Health insurance card
• Military dependent ID
• Medical records
3. SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
• Original Social Security Card (laminated cards are not acceptable).
• Letter from the Social Security Administration verifying you have never been assigned a social security number.
4. PROOF OF RESIDENCY
• Utility bill
• Alaska voter registration card
• Alaska title and/or registration
• Paycheck Stub
• Medical Assistance card
• Public Assistance card
• Cancelled check
• Bank statement
• Mortgage or rental agreement
Alaska driver licenses expire on the applicant’s birthday and are valid for approximately five years. A driver's license issued to an applicant under the age of 21 will expire 90 days after the applicant’s 21st birthday. All applicants under the age of 21 must pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test to renew their license or to upgrade from a permit to a license.
