Corrections Division
The Corrections Division is staffed by the Corrections Sergeant and four Corrections Officers. All staff members are required to attain certification through the Alaska Police Standards Council and are required to attend the Municipal Correctional Officer Academy.
The Unalaska City Jail is a temporary holding facility, owned and operated by the City of Unalaska. The jail has nine beds and is operated 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. City of Unalaska personnel staff the jail. The State Community Jail Program, in part, provides operating funds.
The primary purpose of the Unalaska jail facility is to provide short term housing to all persons arrested on state charges, pending arraignment, release on bail or transfer to larger state facilities. The Unalaska jail also provides detention services for persons serving time for misdemeanor sentences of 30 days or less. Air transportation of inmates to and from Unalaska can be challenging due to the drastic weather conditions and the availability of escort officers.
In addition to the criminal detention role, the Unalaska jail facility provides a short-term detention facility for individuals incapacitated by alcohol or drugs, and for emergency mental holds (A.S. Title 47). As well as temporary housing, on a space available basis, for those prisoners detained by federal and state agencies.
