2020 Population:  4,254

The native Unangax̂ have lived on this island for more than 8,000 years.  In 1759, when Stepan Glotov and other Russian fur hunters arrived, there were more than 1,000 Unangax̂ people living in 25 settlements on the islands of Unalaska and Amaknak.  For the next two centuries, the native population of the islands declined.  As late as the 1960's, the population on the island was predominantly native.

In the mid-1970's and early 80's, with the rapid growth of fisheries in the region, and related support services, the population of Unalaska began to grow.  The population in 2020 was 4,254 full-time residents representing a variety of ethnicities and cultures from around the world.  The population swells during peak seasons of the year, bringing an additional 5-6,000 people to the island.

We enjoy a multicultural community in Unalaska.  The U.S. Census Bureau reported in their 2020 census of the Aleutians West census area, the following percentages:

  • White - 32.58%

  • Asian - 35.12%

  • Alaska Native/American Indian - 4.58%

  • Black - 5.22%

  • Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander - 5.20%

  • Some other Race - 9.90%

  • Two or More Races - 7.40%
