TEENS KILLED WHEN TRUCK GOES OFF CLIFF
At approximately 13:30 hours on Thursday May 9th, 2019 Unalaska Police, Fire and EMS were dispatched to the area of Ulakta Head on Ballyhoo Mountain, where a vehicle was reported to have run off of a cliff. Responders arrived and determined that an occupied 2001 blue Ford pickup had left the roadway and tumbled approximately 900 feet down to the shoreline below. Officers contacted the driver, 18 year old Dustin Ruckman at the scene and were told that he and two companions, 16 year old Karly MacDonald, and 17 year old Kiara Renteria were traveling on the road atop Ballyhoo Mountain when he lost control of the vehicle. Ruckman claimed to have been thrown from the vehicle as it descended down a steep ravine with the two girls still inside. Ruckman reported that he was able to climb back to the road and ran down the East side of the mountain where he flagged down a passing motorist, who called 9-1-1.
Responders had a difficult time accessing the widespread wreckage and searching for the victims due to the rough and extremely steep terrain. Harbor officers approached the scene from the water and had a challenge landing searchers because of the lack of suitable shoreline. Responders searched the ravine at great personal risk from above and below for a long while looking for MacDonald and Renteria before finding their bodies some distance apart where each had been thrown as the truck broke into pieces on its way down the mountain. The girls were both declared deceased at about 17:00 hours Alaska Time. Immediate families have been notified and recovery of their remains is expected to occur on Friday. All three of the youths are lifelong residents of the Unalaska community. Ruckman is a high school senior, McDonald was in her junior year and Renteria her senior year at the Unalaska High School.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
