BALLYHOO MOUNTAIN CRASH CASE TO THE STATE DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Unalaska, Alaska October 22nd, 2019 0900 hrs.
This past week the Unalaska Department of Public Safety began the process of transmitting investigative case information to the State of Alaska’s District Attorney’s office in Anchorage, seeking consideration of criminal charges against Dustin S. Ruckman, the driver of a truck involved in a fatal vehicle crash that occurred on Thursday May 09th, 2019 in Unalaska, Alaska. In that event, 18 year old Kiara T. Renteria-Haist and 16 year old Karly M. McDonald were passengers who died when Ruckman’s truck drove off of Ballyhoo’s mountaintop cliff face, and plummeted approximately 900’ down a mountain ravine. Ruckman escaped the event with only minor injuries.
The District Attorney assigned to this case will be tasked with reviewing the investigative information and determining, if any, what criminal charges may be appropriate. While this initial information is being reviewed by the District Attorney, the Department is continuing with efforts to finalize its investigation, process evidence, and collect reports and supplemental materials from the many other agencies that have assisted with the investigation.
While there is no required timeline for the District Attorney’s review, that agency has been in close contact with the Department, and has assured their commitment to managing this matter as a top-priority amongst their other case load.
