Historic Preservation

Program Mission: Creating and maintaining a series of historic preservation initiatives with the guidance of the Historic Preservation Commission in order to preserve and emphasize the community’s history in accordance with the goals of the comprehensive plan, the City’s ordinances, and the Alaska Office of History and Archeology

What We Do

Ongoing Management of Historic Preservation Requirements. Planning staff will continue to work with the Historic Preservation Commission to pursue initiatives to promote historic preservation goals for the community. These will be driven by State of Alaska requirements for maintaining status as a Certified Local Government and by locally important goals, identified through comprehensive planning and outreach through the Historic Preservation Commission. Planning staff will continue to identify improvements that can be made to the historic preservation program by developing a new Historic Preservation Ordinance that could address some of the issues with commission membership and the local register of historic places. This process will be done in consultation with the commission and with public input.

Special Reports and Plans

The Planning Department is responsible for overseeing and performing special studies as recommended in the Comprehensive Plan or required by Code such as the Historical Resources Inventory and the Annual Historical Preservation Reports.
