FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: William Homka;
Planning Director, City of Unalaska

March 20, 2019, Unalaska, Alaska: The City of Unalaska is working with the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Alaska Shield 2019. The purpose of Alaska Shield is to test Alaska and its participating local jurisdictions’ preparedness for real world events. Alaska Shield will be conducted statewide including Unalaska during the week of April 8, 2019. The exercise will coordinate emergency management, homeland security, and emergency services training and exercise activities.
The exercises include:
- Testing a Small Community Emergency Response Plan (SCERP) or Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) by local jurisdictions.
- Building stronger Incident Management Teams in Alaska, which includes launching the All-Hazards Credentialing Program.
- Building a cadre of training and exercise professionals and instructors in Alaska, so our local training and exercise needs can be met in a timelier manner.
- Synchronizing training and exercise activities with Alaska State Departments and Federal partners.
We need volunteers to simulate some test conditions. Volunteers will be deployed to create a near-real experience for the event. They will be clearly identified by lanyards with the event identification cards. Volunteers will receive a 1GB Optimera Card, a 1 GB USB Drive, a re-usable fold away tote, and a memorable civic experience!
Contact William Homka with questions about Alaska Shield 2019. To learn more about volunteering for this exercise please contact Delanney McConnell at 907-581-3100 or email: [email protected].
