Library Policies

Computer Use Rules and Procedures

  • Computer users must sign up for computer use before beginning their session
  • Computer stations available on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Usage of computers/devices is limited, daily allotment based on expected demand and computer availability and patrons may be granted additional time on a space-available basis
  • Use headphones when listening to audio content, and keep the volume low so you do not disturb others
  • As a courtesy to others, log off completely when you are finished with your session; this also protects the privacy of your search
  • Do not gather around computers when doing so may obstruct others or create noise that disturbs others
  • Children's computers in all locations are for the exclusive use of children and their accompanying caregivers, whether or not the computers are in use

Internet Filtering at the Unalaska Public Library

The Unalaska Public Library filters access to internet content based on requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act.  Individuals over the age of 17 may request that the Internet content filter be bypassed during their Internet session.

Public Access Computers and USA Patriot Act

The USA Patriot Act gives broad investigative powers to both federal and local law enforcement agencies.  Patrons accessing the Internet at the Unalaska Public Library should be aware that there is absolutely no guarantee that anything viewed or typed on a public access computers will remain private or that information entered by users will be automatically erased when an Internet session ends.  Library users should never access personal information such as bank accounts or credit information using public access computers.

Liability

Information obtained through access to the Internet and World Wide Web is unregulated and in many cases incorrect.  The City of Unalaska and the Library Staff assumes no responsibility for information presented and/or used that is gathered from the Internet or World-Wide Web.

Internet Content

The Library Staff has had patron complaints concerning inadvertent viewing of pornography on library Internet access computers.  Any patron accessing pornography will be asked to leave our facility and will face the possibility of losing all Internet access privileges.  Please use common sense.  Remember, what you view can be offensive to other library users.

WiFi

Use of the wireless network is at your own risk. The Unalaska Public Library is not responsible for any damage that  may occur to you, your computer, or your software while connected to the library's WiFi network.

Unattended Children

Library staff members are trained to help children with library materials and services. We want to provide a safe and appropriate environment for all library users. However,our library is a public building and childcare is not the library's role. Parents and caregivers are responsible for the safety, comfort and behavior of their children while in the library. Please make sure your child comes to the library with a responsible person.
