SALARY:             $31.29 - $33.86/Hourly

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Temporary Wastewater Operator-In-Training position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry-level position under the supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor. Performs and assists in a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical work in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city wastewater collection and treatment systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:  
•    Knowledge and/or ability to assist in inspecting, servicing, performing preventative maintenance, and adjusting equipment to ensure the effective operation of motors, pumps, boilers, filters, blowers, chemical systems, and other equipment used in water treatment plants. 
•    Assist in operating valves and gates; start and stop pumps, engines, and generators; and operate all other process equipment to control flow and treatment processes as may be required. 
•    Assist in monitoring gauges, meters, and control devices; interpret record readings; observe variations in operating conditions and test results to determine processing requirements. 
•    Assist in maintaining records, diagnosing equipment and operations malfunctions, requisitioning supplies, and reporting malfunctions to obtain corrective action. 
•    Assist in collecting samples and performing standard water treatment tests or analysis as necessary, and apply corrective measures to treatment processes to complete the routine assignments and provide utility line locates. 
•    Ability and willingness to comply with all City policies and regulations outlined by OSHA and the safety standards.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 
•    A high school diploma and/or GED are required; a combination of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
•    1-2 years post-secondary education in science, engineering, or a closely related field preferred.
•    1-2 years of experience operating, constructing, repairing, and/or maintaining wastewater collection or treatment systems and equipment.

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
•    Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED. 
•    Valid Driver's License (Alaska preferred). 
•    Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing, i.e., Criminal background and History and Drug Testing. 
•    Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by Federal Law, if hired, must complete an employment eligibility verification form (I-9). 
•    Ability to work outside in inclement weather.
