The Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of: POWER HOUSE OPERATOR I.  Position open until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This is an entry-level operator who, under the supervision of the Powerhouse Supervisor, operates and monitors diesel generating units and auxiliary equipment used in the generation of electricity.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Operates diesel generators, electrical switch-gear, fuel transfer pumps, and cooling equipment.  Starts up and shuts down diesel engines; transfers power between generators.  Checks instruments and meters to determine proper operation of equipment; logs meter reads as required.  Maintains proper fuel, lubricant, water and air levels in equipment.  Oils, greases and adjusts machinery and equipment.  Makes minor repairs to diesel engine generators, the power house building, and equipment.  Arranges fuel and oil deliveries.  Cleans floors, windows, tools and power plant equipment.  Takes oil samples for laboratory analysis.  Reports defects and recommends improvements, alterations and repairs.  Performs related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of electrical generating process. Knowledge of occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions associated with working in an industrial/high voltage environment.  Ability to troubleshoot mechanical failures and make minor repairs. Ability to complete routine maintenance and repair on diesel equipment.  Ability to maintain consumption, production and maintenance records.  Ability to communicate with co-workers.  Ability to understand written and oral instructions and to complete assigned tasks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  The minimum qualifications required include a high school diploma or GED certificate and one year experience as a diesel mechanic.  Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Valid Alaska Driver’s License required.  Ear protection is required.  Additional personal protective equipment is worn as needed.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
