POSITION: PART-TIME RECREATION ASSISTANT
SALARY: $27.58 - $29.26/hourly [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-3]
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Part-Time Recreation Assistant position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by employees in this classification. The duties shown are intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direct supervision of the Business and Operations Manager, this position provides routine clerical, secretarial, and administrative work, including answering phones, receiving the public, providing customer assistance, cashiering, data processing, and some bookkeeping.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a job history that includes the following:
• Working knowledge of computers and database software and general office equipment.
• Knowledge and ability to work and follow office practices and procedures.
• Ensure security by opening and closing the building and the safety of persons in the building.
• Process paperwork from memberships to program registrations.
• Some knowledge of accounting principles, receipt of payments, and posting of monies in appropriate accounts. Ability to perform cashier duties accurately.
• Ability to multitask and use a central telephone system, route calls, and or provide information as required.
• Ability to courteously meet and deal with the public and refer to the appropriate person when necessary.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to handle stressful situations.
• Miscellaneous duties as assigned, such as assisting recreation staff with set up and break down, assisting on supply and mail runs, assisting in the kids' room, taking office orders, and cleaning up.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Six (6) months of experience working with the public is required.
• Specialized course work in general office practices and/or one (1) year professional office experience in a public sector environment preferred.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
• Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing, i.e., Criminal background and History and future periodic random drug testing.
• Once hired, you must obtain First Aid, CPR, and AED Certifications.
• To be eligible for employment, you must be authorized to work in the United States and, if hired, complete the Employment Eligibility Verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
• Able to work non-traditional hours and/or on weekends.
BENEFITS:
• The travel allowance is $1,000 every year on your date of hire.
• 24 hours of Floating Holiday per year plus holiday pay.
• 7 Paid Holidays at the rate of 4 hours.
• Paid time off starting at 4 hours per pay period.
• Education incentive per month, dependent on degree: Associate $100, BA $150, Master’s $200
