HIRING WAGE: $29.27 - $31.06 / hour (Step 1-3)

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Administrative Assistant II position in the Department of Public Utilities. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position provides essential support to the Public Works and Public Utilities Departments. Key responsibilities include serving as the primary point of contact for the departments, answering phones, assisting the public, and maintaining organized files. This role also involves managing office supplies, coordinating front office duties such as utility requests and permit applications, and assisting with financial tasks like reconciling invoices and processing payments. The Administrative Assistant reports directly to the Office Manager and works independently with minimal supervision.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal. The successful candidate will be a highly organized and efficient individual capable of building and maintaining positive working relationships with the public, Unalaska officials, and staff. They must possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to learn and apply various departmental procedures and tasks quickly. A professional demeanor and the ability to work effectively under pressure are essential. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in office practices and procedures, including general record-keeping, filing systems, and the operation of standard office equipment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and database software is mandatory.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and one year of professional office experience. Preferred qualifications include two or more years of professional office experience, preferably in a public sector environment, previous bookkeeping experience, and knowledge of the Munis software system. Other combinations of education or experience that could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
> Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire;
> Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
> Successfully pass background tests, which include criminal background, professional, and reference checks.
> Successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
