Police Chief Candidate Visit
NEWS RELEASE
June 26, 2020, 12:15pm
City of Unalaska Welcomes Police Chief Candidate
City Manager Erin Reinders is pleased to announce Jay King from Montgomery, Alabama as the finalist in our nationwide search for Unalaska’s next Police Chief. Mr. King was selected after two rounds of remote interviews with several staff members. The finalist is scheduled to arrive in Unalaska on June 27 for an onsite visit, departing July 1.
“I look forward to meeting Mr. King in order to learn more about him, and for him to have the opportunity to learn more about our diverse community. Nothing replaces an onsite visit to our island when making such significant personal, professional, and organizational decisions,” said City Manager Reinders.
Mr. King currently serves as a Police Major and the Administrative Division Commander for the Montgomery Police Department in Montgomery, Alabama. He holds a Master’s Degree in Justice and Public Safety from Auburn University. He has dedicated over 25 years to serving the City of Montgomery Police Department. Mr. King’s background also includes fire service and emergency management.
“We are in a unique time in history, with the globe in the midst of pandemic and overwhelming calls to address social injustice. City of Unalaska employees continue in our commitment to serve our community, and the Police Chief plays a leadership role in providing that service. We have taken great strides to safely incorporate community and employee engagement in the interview process.” said Reinders.
KUCB will host a call-in show with the finalist at 11am on Monday, June 29. A Meet and Greet Event will take place on Monday, June 29 from 5pm-7pm at City Hall, to allow community members to briefly meet Mr. King in person. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place for the Meet and Greet Event and will not allow for congregating. A final interview, including local community leaders on the panel, will take place during the onsite visit.
Mr. King will observe COVID-19 safety protocols during their visit and will supply proof of his negative COVID-19 test on arrival. While on island, he will quarantine when not participating in interview related activities and will follow social distancing guidelines and face covering requirements.
An additional candidate, Heath Scott from Haines, Alaska, was also invited for an onsite visit but withdrew from the process on June 25, 2020.
