Announcing New Police Chief, Jay King
NEWS RELEASE
July 2, 2020, 1:30 pm
City of Unalaska Welcomes New Police Chief
City Manager Erin Reinders is pleased to announce that Jay King has accepted an offer to serve as the City of Unalaska’s new Police Chief.
“Jay King’s demonstrated commitment to public service shines through in his background and will be of great benefit to Unalaska. I look forward to what the future holds for the Department of Public Safety as we transition to Mr. King’s permanent leadership,” said City Manager Reinders.
Jay King has dedicated more than 25 years of service to the City of Montgomery Police Department in Alabama. Mr. King currently serves as a Police Major and is the Administrative Division Commander. His background includes both military and civilian law enforcement and he has experience in both fire service and emergency management. Mr. King holds a Master’s Degree in Justice and Public Safety from Auburn University and is presently enrolled in a Master’s Program for Public Administration. Additionally, he is involved in numerous professional, civic and charitable organizations.
Mr. King was selected after a nationwide search for Unalaska’s next Police Chief, resulting in a total of thirteen applicants. The selection process consisted of two rounds of remote interviews and an onsite visit that included an additional panel interview with community members, a community meet and greet, a radio call in show, and an opportunity to spend time with Public Safety staff. A thorough background check is currently underway.
“I would also like to thank Interim Chief John Lucking for his service during such challenging times in our community, and for his commitment to a successful transition as we move forward,” said Reinders.
Mr. King is expected to start his new position with the City no later than September 1, 2020.
