Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of WASTEWATER OPERATOR II. One (1) position is open and applications will be accepted until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position performs a variety of skilled, technical, supervisory, and administrative work in the planning, construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City wastewater collection or treatment systems.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates and occasionally oversees in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of wastewater collection, treatment and electrical systems and oversees and trains operators of lower level classification. Responsible for inspecting, servicing, preventative maintenance, and adjusting equipment to ensure effective operation of motors, pumps , boilers, blowers, chemical systems and other equipment used in wastewater treatment plants. Monitors gauges, meters, and control devices; interprets and records readings; observes variations in operating conditions and test results to determine processing requirements; operates valves and gates; starts and stops pumps, engines and generators; and operates all other process equipment to control flow and treatment processes as may be required. Maintains records, diagnoses equipment and operations malfunctions, requisitions supplies, takes remedial action to correct and/or reports malfunctions to obtain corrective action.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska. Considerable knowledge of sewer pipe installation, connections and repair, wastewater system operation and maintenance. General knowledge of federal, state and City of Unalaska rules and regulations and policies regarding wastewater system and operations. Ability to follow a basic wiring diagram; operate all wastewater system equipment and conduct routine tests of samples.
Thorough knowledge of machinery, equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater collection and treatment systems. Skill in operation of backhoe/loader, hand power tools, mechanical and related tools. Working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment. Ability to operate motor vehicle, mobile radio, phone, copy and fax machine.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School graduation or equivalent. Five years of experience relating to the operation, construction, repair and/or maintenance of wastewater collection or treatment systems, including the operation of related maintenance equipment preferred. Other equivalent combination of education and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, abilities and certification may be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License Class A with X endorsement. State of Alaska Level I Wastewater Treatment Certification. State of Alaska Level 2 Wastewater Collection Certification. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis. Position is subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
