POSITION: Wastewater Laboratory Manager
HIRING WAGE: $72,359.14- $90,095.72/annual
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Laboratory Manager. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position oversees the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Laboratory and has advanced technical, analytical and mathematical skills necessary to provide the appropriate direction and guidance to the Wastewater Supervisor and Operators regarding Wastewater treatment plant operations, simple procedures and process control.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Directs and supervises activities and personnel related to all Wastewater treatment plant lab work and responsibilities. Establishes and maintains the WWTP lab in compliance with EPA’s DMR-QA program and ensures compliance with the ADEC Drinking Water Laboratory Certification Program. Develops and maintains the WWTP lab budgets, provides the information to the Director of Public Utilities and monitors budget on a continual basis. Directs sample collection of wastewater treatment field analysis as necessary and analyzes lab and process control data and provides appropriate direction and guidance to the Wastewater Supervisor and Operators as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska. Considerable knowledge of wastewater system operation. Possess analytical skills needed to operate and maintain lab equipment, maintain lab records, prepare reports, make chemical dilutions and run various analyses required by NPDES permit and for operational purposes, which include but may not be limited to BOD, TSS, pH, DO, Settleable Solids, Total Solids and Fecal Coliform.
Thorough knowledge of machinery, equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater treatment systems. Ability to operate and maintain lab equipment such as DO meter, pH meter, ovens, incubators, spectrometer, fume hood and water purifier. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computers in a Windows environment including Excel, Access and Word.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor`s Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or related field.
2 years professional experience, preferably related to wastewater or water treatment laboratory management and previous work experience in a wastewater or water treatment lab and previous work experience as a Wastewater Operator.
Other equivalent combinations of education and experience, which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities and certification required, may be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to operate a City vehicle and work in a variety of environmental settings including extreme weather conditions, obnoxious odors and potential exposure to hazardous areas or situations, such as pathogens, chemicals and dangerous gases.
Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
Successfully pass background check which includes criminal background, professional and reference check.
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
