Position: Temporary Groundskeeper [6 months only]
Hiring Wage: $19.95 – $21.17 hourly [nonexempt]
The Unalaska Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Temporary Groundskeeper in Public Works Department. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry level position which, under the direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of park and recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, and parks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Must have the ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety. Ability and skills in safely operating tools used in the grounds keeping and maintenance trades such as lawn mowers, weedwhackers and power tools. Other duties and skill in collecting and disposing of waste from buildings and preforming minor interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other semi -skilled trade works. Must have the ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions. The basic understanding of plumbing, carpentry, and painting in order to make minor repairs to the facilities. Understanding of basic math. Self-starter and self-motivation when working alone. Able to work professional and courteously with others. Willingness and ability to problem solve.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Have some experience with mowing, edging, pruning, watering and applying insecticides and fertilizers.
Combinations of education and experience, which could provide knowledge, skills and abilities listed, will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends with possible hours during the week for various other activities.
Ability to work outdoors.
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirement by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification (I-9)
Ability to pass all pre-employment required testing i.e. Drug and background.
