Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Temporary Groundskeeper. Position is open for applications until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry level position which, under the direct supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of park and recreation buildings, grounds, open spaces, and parks.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Mows and maintains park and open space areas. Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds. Opens, closes, locks, and unlocks, facilities as needed. Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs; prepares facilities for park and recreation program use. Performs minor interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work. Moves, loads and unloads supplies, material, tools and equipment. Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment. Maintains records of work completed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have the ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety. Ability to safely operate tools used in the grounds keeping and maintenance trades. The ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions. The basic understanding of plumbing, carpentry, and painting in order to make minor repairs to the facilities. Understanding of basic math.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Have some experience with mowing, edging, pruning, watering and applying insecticides and fertilizers. Combinations of education and experience, which could provide knowledge, skills and abilities listed, will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Willingness to work outside is required. A valid Alaska driver's license is required. Position is subject to successful completion of a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis. Will be required to become a member in good standing with IUOE Local 302, within 30 days of employment.
