Position:                  POLICE SERGEANT
Hiring Wage:           $42.57-$45.16 /hour *Internal Employees may be subject to different hourly pay* 

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Police Sergeant in the Department of Public Safety.  Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a first-line supervisory position that, under moderate supervision from the Deputy Police Chief, directs the day-to-day activities of the Police officers in accordance with policies and procedures and in addition to fulfilling all duties of a Police Officer. Must be able to perform duties such as responding to calls for service from the public, conducting vehicle and foot patrol, responsible for oversight of complex criminal investigations, coordinating, assisting, and evaluating officers’ work, writing reports, provides training in basic and advanced law enforcement and public safety issues, responsible for administrative duties, projects, surveys, and time cards. Must conduct self professionally and respond to inquiries regarding police matters and other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a job history that includes the following: understanding criminal law and procedures, proficiency in investigative techniques, ability to demonstrate and possess efficient leadership competencies, ability to communicate fluently in English (verbally and in writing), work effectively with the public, staff, vendors, and agencies in a courteous, efficient and professional manner, have strong written communication skills, efficiently problem solve and have productive and positive interpersonal skills. Must be capable to maintain composure and professionalism under pressure and uphold confidentiality.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma and or GED is required; a combination of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • Five (5) years experience as Law Enforcement Officer, or two (2) year degree and two (2) years experience as Law Enforcement Officer. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • One (1) year as a supervisor in a professional setting is preferred.

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and must be a US citizen by birth or naturalization by the time of hire
  • Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire
  • Required to hold and retain active various certifications required for Police Officers, uphold law enforcement code of ethics, and ability to meet APSC standards
  • Current First Aid and CPR are required
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by federal law, if hired must complete employment eligibility verification (I-9)
  • Required to complete pre-employment testing which includes; thorough and extensive criminal investigation, fingerprints and drug testing, and Physical and psychological testing post offer
  • Must be able to carry and be proficient with a firearm
  • Must not have any misdemeanor convictions in the last three (3) years
  • No domestic violence-related misdemeanor convictions and no illegal drug use in the past five (5) years
  • Required to work rotating shifts with emergency or non-traditional work hours as necessary

  • If applicable, lump sum relocation payment (taxable) of $5,000 plus airfare for the employee and one family member (refer to PSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement for details)
  • Work out incentive pay up to $500 /month
  • Education incentive per month dependent on degree Associate $200, BA $300, Masters $400
  • Travel allowance is $2,000 every year on your date of hire
